Cycling the South Island of New Zealand

Day 4 (February 17, 2009)

Mount Cook from the Tekapo Canal
Mount Cook from the Tekapo Canal

Today I cycled from Lake Tekapo to Lake Punaki. 15 miles of the route was along a hydroelectric canal - perfectly flat, no traffic, bright sunshine, and views of Mt. Cook poking above the clouds. And then a nice downhill at the end where they generate the power. Cycling doesn't come much better than this! I took a break at a salmon farm along the way, and fed the salmon creating a writhing mass like koi.

Now I'm at Glenntanner, about 20 miles up the Mt. Cook valley (I say up, but it's along the lake, so was quite flat). I'm having tea in the cafe. Mt. Cook is spectacular at the head of the valley, with its summit covered with a fresh early snow fall. Cycling up the valley gave great views as Mt. Cook became more prominent above the milky blue lake. Glentanner is just about at the head of the lake. It looks like brown moraine between here and the head of the valley, but still pretty.

I have a day off tomorrow. There are lots of noisy activities here - helicopter rides etc. - but I think I will just cycle the remaining 10 miles up the valley (it seems quite flat) and do a short walk to the glacier. These mechanized things seem alien after 4 days of pedalling!
