The following pages describe a 4-week cycling tour of the South Island of New Zealand that I did on my
Bike Friday Air Glide in February and March, 2009. For a day-by-day account you can
start here or use the calendar below for individual days. If you just want to see a selection of the photos I took, you can find them
here, or a slideshow
here.
My route started in Christchurch and toured in a clockwise direction the northern two thirds of the South Island. In planning the route, both in advance and on the fly, the Pedallers' Paradise guide book by Nigel Rushton was an invaluable source. I also used Lonely Planet's Cycling New Zealand (now out of print) and various web resources in the planning stages.
The detailed path I took is shown on this Google map (or this version with associated photos). This is the actual track downloaded from my Magellan Meridian GPS, processed with GPSBabel and GPS Visualizer. You can enlarge the map to see the details of the route. This GPX file of the track might be useful for plotting in other mapping programs.
