Cycling the South Island of New Zealand

Day 7 (February 20, 2009)

Wet! Wet! Wet!

It's forecast to rain for two days, so there wasn't much choice but to cycle onwards through it. I've done the worst of it now - over the Lindis Pass at 3176ft and 38 miles of emptiness. At least the wind was behind me most of the way, and it wasn't too bad really. Quite pretty in a bleak way.

Now I'm at Taras, a tiny stopping point with a gas station and a wool shop/cafe. Very welcome! I'm a little damp, but not soaked. The new pannier covers that Lynn sewed seem to be doing their job too. I have about 20 more miles to go, mainly flat or downhill I think.

It only rained lightly for the rest of the way. Cromwell is not a very exciting place. Over dinner at a nice restaurant in the mall I read a history pamphlet which explained that the old town was flooded when (yet another) hydroelectric dam was built in the 1970s, and the center of the town was moved to the new, rather characterless, mall. There are a few reconstructed old buildings down by the river - I wandered around there before dinner, but it was rather cold and windy, and the stores were closed, so I didn't stay long.
